Chapter Thirty-Six

Daniel rolled toward me and touched his nose to mine, purring like a satisfied cat. “Good morning.”

“Hi.”

“Did you sleep okay?”

“Uh-huh.”

I had no idea how to handle this situation. There was no kata I could have practiced with Sensei for morning-after banter, and I certainly had never discussed such a thing with Ma. Where did other women learn strategies for love—with friends, sisters, romance blogs?

He pulled me closer. “I’m glad you’re here.”

My limbs wrapped around his of their own accord, some actions didn’t require training.

Speaking paused as we explored more intimate means of communication, teasing, tantalizing, direct. I welcomed every new sensation and applied myself to the lessons with acuity and enthusiasm. When our bodies collapsed, I snuggled against his chest and listened to the soothing lullaby of his heart.

“Are you happy?”

I felt as if a filter had been removed from my sight. “I am.”

He hugged me close and rocked me to the edge of sleep. My phone rang and jolted me awake. “Relax, Lily, it’s just a call.”

“Everyone knows I’m in Hong Kong. They should be texting, not calling.” I crawled out of Daniel’s arms. “Have you seen my bag?”

“The black one or the backpack?”

“Either. Both. Why is everything of yours so orderly?”

He grinned. “You were in a hurry?”

The ringing stopped. “Oh, great. Now I can’t follow the sound.”

Daniel reached for his phone, set neatly on the night table beside a pack of condoms and a glass of water. “I’ll call you.”

It rang in the bathroom. I wrapped myself in a towel and checked my messages, a missed call from Ma.

She answered on the first ring. “Lily? Are you okay? Where are you?”

I had forgotten to text. “Hi, Ma.”

“Don’t ‘Hi Ma’ me. Your bed hasn’t been slept in. Where are you?’

I sat on the tub and buried my face in my hand. I felt like a teenager caught in her room with a boy—as if I would have ever done that. “I’m safe. In a hotel room. With Daniel.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry if I worried you. I should have texted. Ma, I’m a grown woman, not a child. If I want to stay out all—”

“Stop. When you come back to the house, wear the shirt and shorts you had on before. I’ll tell Gung-Gung and Po-Po you hiked to the reservoir this morning. I expect you to say the same.”

“You want me to lie?”

“Yes, Lily. That’s exactly what I want you to do.”

She ended the call, leaving me in shock. Was she so ashamed? After all her matchmaking, she should have been overjoyed about Daniel and me. Was she upset about the pre-marital sex, or that I would shame her in the eyes of her parents?

“Is everything okay?” Daniel called from the other room.

“Yep. Just hopping in the shower,” I lied.

He appeared in the doorway, naked and beautiful. “Want company?”

I took in the gorgeous sight and shook my head. “I should go. I have to hike to the Aberdeen Reservoir and back to my grandparents’ place in the next hour.”

He took my hand from the shower faucet.
